Disturbances in the Georgian Wrestling

Presidium of the Georgian Wrestling Federation’s Supervisory Board gathered on November 24. 24 from 37 members showed up at the meeting. The presence of 25 members was needed for legitimacy. Veteran wrestler Mikheil Saladze joined the meeting later. Veteran wrestler Roman Rurua led the meeting which was closed for mass media.

Irakli Dolaberidze, head of Sports Department of Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, joined the meeting later.

After the meeting mass media found out special session of the Georgian Wrestling Federation will be held on December 26, 2014.

“World Sport” talked to some veteran wrestlers.

Roman Rurua (European, world and Olympic champion, head coach of the Georgia Greco-Roman wrestling team)

- Is today’s session of the Supervisory Board legitimate?

- The Supervisory Board session has been held several times but more than 25 members have never attended it. If those sessions were legitimate, then today’s one must also be.

- What are the pretensions of the Supervisory Board toward Kurtanidze?

- There are so many violations that I cannot name all of them.

- Can you name some of them?

- Kurtanidze is making decisions without asking the Supervisory Board. Coaches and wrestlers have not received salaries for 2 months. Presidium protocols are also falsified…

- Which issues will be discussed at the special session on December 26?

- Changing today’s regulations will be on agenda. The work of the federation during the last 2 years will be discussed as well. After that we will make a decision. If the work of the federation will be evaluated positively, Kurtanidze will stay. Otherwise, he will resign.

Davit Gobejashvili (European, world and Olympic champion)

- I think Kurtanidze has some violations.

- Is the intervention of the Prosecutor’s Office needed?

- I do not think the Prosecutor’s Office must intervene in wrestling. We, members of this family, must solve this problem.
