Amiran Papinashvili (60kg), Georgian European Champion, is one step away from the pedestal. He took the 5th place in the World Champion, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, yesterday.
Papinashvili was #1 seed among 61 participants and he began from the 2nd circle, from 1/16 final, where he tackled Turkish Ahmet Sahin Kaba at the end of 4th minute. Before this he won over his opponent by waza-ari.
In the 1/8 final he defeated German Tobias Englmayer twice by Yuko. After him he defeated Kazakh Askhat Telmanov by ippon, but at the beginning of the fight he made his fans to nervous – he lost Yuko at the first minute. Soon, Amiran won by waza-ari and then he tackled his opponent and if he had another 2 seconds he would win the 2nd waza-ari. He performed ippon with rare beauty throw.
He lost the chance of winning gold-silver medals 24 minutes before the final siren. Amiran Papinashvili was winning against Mongolian Amartuvshin Dashdavaa 3:1, but he suddenly fell on his shoulders.
In the bronze final, Georgian judoka lost another ippon to Orkhan Safarov of Azerbaijan, 1 and a half minutes earlier before the final sirene.
Japanese Naohisa Takato became the World Champion, who defeated Dashdavaa on warnings.
Champions and prize winners will be found out on 27 August in men 66kg weight category, and in women – 52kg weight category. Lasha Shavdatuashvili, Olympic and European Champion, will complete in the name of Georgia.
Shavdatuashvili, in the 66kg weight category, will rest in the first circle and will join in the 1/32 final, where his opponent will be Yung Sik Choe of North Korea.
