On March 5-6, Shota Chochishvili Judo Academy hosted Georgian Cadet Championship. According to the decision of the team coaches, the championship was held with repechage rule. This way, coaches gave chance to sportsmen to show themselves.
About 250 Georgian cadets participated in the championship. Matches were held on two tatamis.
On Saturday, matches lasted for more than 9 hours. Winners were found out in 4 weight classes and Kakheti region advanced. Two members of this regional team: Vano Mamisashvili (55 kg) and Tamaz Kirakozashvili (60 kg) became champions. Tbilisi and Shida Kartli won one gold medal. Mikheil Kirkitadze wrestled in the name of Tbilisi in 50 kg and he became champion. Giorgi Muzashvili from Shida Kartli became champion in 66 kg.
The second day of the championship was more successful for the participants from Tbilisi – Beka Dongvani (73 kg) and Shalva Chocheli (90 kg) won gold medals and their team took the 1st place. Kakheti took the second place and Shida Kartli took the 3rd place. Beka Gviniashvili from Shida Kartli took the 1st place in 81 kg. Giorgi Lazuashvili took from Imereti region the 1st place in heavyweight. Chocheli and Lazuashvili were in top 3 last year but none of them went through the final – both of them won bronze medals.
“I am not dissatisfied with the result but to tell the truth I expected better competition. I cannot make final conclusion according to yesterday’s and today’s results. Domestic competition is underway and we are planning to hold 4 tournaments to fill the list of European Championship. Two will be foreign tournaments and two will be domestic ones. On March 19-20, we will compete in Antalya international tournament. Yet, I cannot name the staff because I do not know it myself. But perhaps, we will compete with expanded staff. At the end of March, we will compete in Ukrainian tournament. Then we are planning to hold tournaments in Gori and Sagarejo” – Giorgi Vazagashvili, head coach of Georgian cadet team, told “World Sport”.
