The 14th European Individual Championships is underway in Legnica, Poland. Four Georgians are among 286 participants – Baadur Jobava, Merab Gagunashvili, Tornike Sanikidze and Davit Lomsadze. The tournament is based on Swiss system and 11 rounds will be held. After 3 rounds 9 chess players have maximum points. Davit Shengelia of Austria is among the leaders. Jobava, Gagunashvili and Sanikidze have 2-2 points. Lomsadze has only one point. Tornike Sanikidze could have been among the leaders if he had not lost to Shimanov of Russia. In the third round Baadur Jobava beat Simacek. Merab Gagunashvili played draw with Armenian Vladimir Akopian.
In the 4th round Jobava will play against Gabor Papp of Bulgaria, Merab Gagunshvili – against Gudmundur Kjartansson of Iceland. Both Georgians will play with white pieces. Sanikidze will play against Grzegorz Gajewski of Poland and Lomsadze – against Aleksander Mista of Poland.
Prize money of the tournament is 100 000 EUR and the best 23 chess players will compete in World Cup.
