Chance for the second is still there

Georgian national basketball team won their match in Fafe. The visitors led from start to finish not letting the home side dominate even by one point. Igor Kokoshkov’s team won by 23 points but if we look back to the game scenario it could have won with more solid advantage.

Considering the fact that home side played very poorly, away team looked very solid. In despite of that, however, Georgia made tons of mistakes which almost led to the neutralization of the 21-point lead which Georgian side gained in the first half of the game. Portugal managed to cut the lead down to eight points.

Portugal made 10 out of 28 attempted two pointers and 8 out of 41 (!) from the downtown. It is nonsense to think about the victory having this kind of terrible statistics. On the other hand, Georgian had a trouble shooting free throws throughout the game, making only 25 out of 41 possible free throws which, in fact, is a poor result.

By winning today’s encounter Kokoshkov’s team has remained chance of finishing in the second spot. In order for this to happen, Georgia should celebrate victory in the next game at home against the Bulgarian side, while Belgium should not lose at home to Poland.

The unfortunate fact is that from today’s standings perspective Georgia has a very low chance of qualifying directly from the group for the European Championship. The reason for this is a low points difference between us and the other groups’ second placed teams.
