A new page of history is written! The Georgia national team held the last match of the group stage against Portugal, won 2:0 and made through to 1/8 final at the EURO 2024.
At the 2nd minute Giorgi Mikautadze assisted Khvicha Kvaratskhelia who scored his first goal at this tournament – 1:0.
Portugal started playing actively. First, Ronaldo took a long free kick but Mamardashvili saved the net. Then, Conceicao and Felix had chances but both of them missed.
In the second half Portugal made two substitutions. Ruben Neves replaced Joao Palhinha. Roberto Martinez’s team strengthened their attacks but the Georgians managed to create one dangerous counterattack when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia failed to score a goal.
In the 55th minute the opponent committed a foul against Luka Lochoshvili in the box. Referee Sandro Scharer checked this moment on the VAR and awarded a penalty. Mikautadze scored the penalty and is a top scorer of the tournament – 2:0.
Portugal did not have a clear chance till the end of the match which finished in 2:0 in our favor.
Georgia beat Portugal, made through to 1/8 final of the European Championship and will face Spain on June 30.
Turkey defeated Czech Republic 2:1, took the second place in the group and will play Austria in 1/8 final.
