21-year-old Georgian tennis player Mariam Bolkvadze has a successful start in the main draw of US Open.
Injured Bolkvadze had both legs in bandages but she did her best against world No.65 America’s Bernanda Pera and beat her 6:3, 5:7, 6:4 in 2 hours and 21 minutes.
The Georgian served 2 aces and made 5 double faults (the American – 3 and 4). Bolkvadze won 63% (37 from 59) on the first serve and 56% (23 from 41) on the second. Mariam used 6 from 20 break-points and lost her own serve 4 times (Pera had 9 break-points).
Bolkvadze earned 100 000 USD and 45 ranking points by making through to the second round of US Open. Currently the Georgian is world No.202 but according to the live-ranking she is in the 151st place with 398 points.
Bolkvadze will hold a historic match in the second round. She will face world No.3 Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova.
