Yesterday champions and prize winners were revealed in men’s 100 and +100 kg and women’s +78 kg at World Championship in Budapest. Four judokas wrestled in the name of Georgia.
Elene Kebadze (+78 kg) lost the first meeting to Jasmin Kuelbs of Germany.
Varlam Liparteliani, Guram Tushishvili and Adam Okruashvili (+100 kg) opened the championship with victories. All of them made through to ¼ final.
Liparteliani beat four opponents by waza-aris - Koffi Kreme Kobena of Cote d’lvoire, Lyes Bouyacoub of Algeria, Jevgenijs Borodavko of Latvia and Kirill Denisov of Russia.
In semifinal the Georgian judoka defeated Elkhan Mammadov of Azerbaijan by shido. One more victory and Liparteliani would have achieved the biggest success in his career but unfortunately, he won another silver medal. This time Varlam failed to Aaron Wolf of Japan in final.
Varlam Liparteliani is the only Georgian judoka who has won four medals at World Championship.
Guram Tushishvili (+100 kg) arrived in Hungary as a current European champion. The 22-year-old Georgian had all favorites in his draw.
Tushishvili defeated Sungmin Kim of South Korea by waza-ari, Alex Garcia Mendoza of Cuba by waza-ari and Daniel Allerstorfer of Austria. In semifinal the Georgian judoka wrestled against French superstar Teddy Riner. Tushishvili was close to victory but finally, he lost by waza-ari.
In repechage Guram fell to Tuvshinbayar Naidan of Mongolia and took the fifth place.
Another Georgian heavyweight Adam Okruashvili won over Ahmed Wahid of Egypt, Stanislav Bondarenko of Ukraine and lost to Barna Bor of Hungary.
In repechage Adam failed to Tuvshinbayar Naidan of Mongolia and took the seventh place.
The Georgian judo team won 3 medals at the 2017 World Championship. Vazha Margvelashvili (66 kg) and Ushangi Margiani (90 kg) won bronze medals. Varlam Liparteliani (100 kg) won silver medal.
Today the tournament will end up with the team championship.
