Georgian national sambo team gained 9 medals at the World Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria. In 57 kg weight category Vakhtang Chidrashvili won the gold and in 90 kg – Paata Gviniashvili.
In the decisive meeting, Chidrashvili won over Ierbolat Baibatirov of Kazakhstan and became the world champion for the fourth time. As for Gviniashvili, he reached the pedestal for the first time. In final, he defeated Russian Sergei Riabov.
Levan Nakhutsrishvili (74) and Niko Kutsia (82 kg) lacked one step to reach the highest title. Both lost the final and won silver medals. Zviad Odoshashvili (62), Davit Loriashvili (100) and Beka Berdzenishvili (+100 kg) gained the bronze. Women also took the third place: Nino Odzelashvili (72) and Elene Kebadze (+80).
It has been 6 years that Georgian sambo team does not return from the World Championship without gold.
