Zviad Gogotchuri Is a Paralympic Champion

Zviad Gogotchuri, member of the Georgian para-judo team, won gold medal at the Summer Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He is the first-ever athlete from Georgia to win medal at the Paralympic Games. The historic medal is gold and the Georgian anthem was played in Rio de Janeiro.

11 para-judoka competed in 90 kg. Gogotchuri started participating from ¼ final where he beat Jorge Lencina of Argentina by ippon in 38 seconds. In semifinal the Georgian won over Dartanyon Crockett of America in a minute and half.

In final Zviad Gogotchuri defeated Oleksandr Nazarenko of Ukraine by penalties.

Georgia has 5 athletes at the Paralympic Games in Rio. These athletes are: Zviad Gogotchuri, Irma Khetsuriani (wheelchair fencing), Akaki Jincharadze (powerlifting), Vano Tsiklauri (archery) and Lia Chachibaia (swimming).
