Historic Day of the Georgian Weightlifting and Datunashvili's Weak Start

After one-day break, tribunes of the second hall of Carioca Arena were crowded again. This time Carioca Arena hosted Greco-Roman wrestlers. On the first day champions and prize winners were revealed in two weight categories: 59 and 75 kg. Georgia did not have a participant in 59 kg because London Olympic medalist Revaz Lashkhi could not gain Rio licence.

As for 75 kg, Zurab Datunashvili wrestled in this weight category but he lost the first round to Doszhan Kartikov of Kazakhstan 2:0. Unfortunately, Kartikov lost the second round and Datunashvili did not have a chance to wrestle for bronze medal.

Ismael Borrero of Cuba became champion in 59 kg. In final he beat Shinobu Ota of Japan. In 75 kg final Roman Vlasov of Russia defeated Mark Madsen of Denmark.

After the wrestling we went to watch weightlifting. Champion and prize winners were revealed in +75 kg. For the first time in history of the Georgian weightlifting Georgia had a participant in the Olympics.

European silver medalist Anastasiia Hotfrid lifted barbell in Group B and took the 4th place among 8 participants. Hotfrid lifted 113 kg in snatch and 135 kg in clean and jerk.

Today four Georgians will compete in the Olympics. Greco-Roman champions and prize winners will be revealed in 85 and 130 kg. Robert Kobliashvili (86 kg) and Iakob Kajaia (130 kg) will wrestle in the name of Georgia.

Athlete Lasha Torgvaidze will participate in the qualifying round of triple jump. Giorgi Chkheidze (105 kg) will compete in weightlifting.
