On the second day of European Championship the Georgian judo team won three silver and one bronze medal. Men and women champions and prize winners in two-two weight categories were revealed on Kazan tatami today. Four judokas wrestled in the name of Georgia and all of them reached Top 3. Lasha Shavdatuashvili (73 kg), Avtandil Tchrikishvili (81 kg) and Esther Stam (70 kg) lost finals and took the second places.
In final referee prevented Shavdatuashvili from winning gold medal and he lost to Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan. (VIDEO)
Before the final, Lasha beat Andre Alves of Portugal, Dmytro Kanivets of Ukraine, teammate Nugzar Tatalashvili and Martin Hojak of Slovenia.
Before wrestling against Shavdatuashvili, Tatalashvili defeated Georgios Azoidis of Greece and Nikola Gardasevic of Montenegro. In repechage the Georgian judoka won over Igor Wandtke of Germany and Denis Iartcev of Russia (VIDEO).
One of the main disappointments for the fans was Avtandil Tchrikishvili’s (81 kg) failure. Tchrikishvili fell to Khasan Khalmurzaev of Russia (VIDEO). Before that, the Georgian beat Marcel Ott of Austria, Emirhan Yucel of Turkey, Valeriu Duminica of Romania and Robin Pacek of Sweden.
Esther Stam’s (70 kg) silver medal was a huge surprise for the fans. She defeated Roxane Taeymans of Belgium, Laura Vargas Koch of Germany, Szabina Gercsak of Hungary and Fanny Estelle Posvite of France. In final Stam failed to 3-time world champion Gevrise Emane of France, earned 240 ranking points along with silver medal and guaranteed Olympic license.
Tomorrow men champions and prize winners will be revealed in 90, 100 and +100 kg and women champions and prize winners – in 78 and +78 kg. Varlam Liparteliani (90 kg), Beka Gvinishvili (100 kg), Adam Okruashvili and Levan Matiashvili (both +100 kg) will wrestle from the Georgian team.
