Liparteliani Brought the First Medal to Georgia

Georgian judokas Varlam Liparteliani and Beka Gviniashvili (both 90 kg) wrestled each other in repechage final at World Judo Championships. Liparteliani won the first medal from the Georgian team.

19-year-old Gviniashvili defeated four opponents and went through to semifinal. He beat Quedjau Nhabali of Ukraine, Patryk Ciechomski of Poland and Aleksandar Kukolj of Serbia. In ¼ final the Georgian judoka won over Mashu Baker of Japan by yuko.

In semifinal Gviniashvili lost to Kirill Denisov of Russia by two waza-aris.

Varlam Liparteliani fell to Dong Han Gwak of South Korea in ¼ final. Before that he won over Mihail Marchitan of the United Arab Emirates, Jacob Larsen of America and Alexandre Iddir of France.

In repechage semifinal Liparteliani defeated Aaron Hildebrand of Germany by waza-ari. Then, he beat Gviniashvili and won world bronze medal twice in a row.

Esther Stam (70 kg) also wrestled on the Kazakhstani tatami today. She beat Assmaa Niang of Morocco but then failed to Chizuru Arai of China.

Tomorrow champions and prize winners will be revealed in men’s 100 and +100 kg and women’s +78 kg. Adam Okruashvili and Levan Matiashvili (both +100 kg) will wrestle in the name of Georgia.
