Preparation for the First European Games

The meeting of the executive committee was held at the Georgian National Olympic Committee. Upcoming European Games in Baku was discussed at the meeting. Representatives of those sports federations which will compete in Baku attended the executive committee.

The European Games will be held for the first time. It will launch on June 12 and end up on June 28. 104 Georgian athletes will compete in 13 different sports. Overall, 170 Georgians will live in the Olympic village.

Georgia will have 43 representatives in athletics. The Georgian delegation relies on judo. 10 Georgian judokas will compete in Baku.

European Judo Championships will be held during Baku European Games. Besides judo, the Georgian delegation is expecting medals from sambo, Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestlers. Georgia will also participate in canoe sprint, diving, swimming, gymnastics, karate, boxing, archery, cycling, judo, sambo, wrestling and athletics.

The first part of the Georgian delegation (30 athletes) will visit the capital of Azerbaijan on June 11.

Zurab Kakhabrishvili, doctor of the Olympic teams, stated he has information that some athletes must take drug test before the tournament.

“There are serious injuries in freestyle wrestling. Judoka Ushangi Margiani will wrestle in Baku. He had injury but will recover soon. As for micro injuries, they are not in the team. I want to say that some athletes must take drug test to avoid scandal and problems in Baku. We must not take a risk. Some sportsmen lost the Georgian Championship on purpose”, - stated Kakhabrishvili.

Tariel Khechikashvili, minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, also attended the meeting of the executive committee. He promised the federations to support them.

“We will manage to hold successful period with cooperation. The Olympic Committee and we must do everything for success. We promise all federations to support them. The government is always ready for that”, - stated Khechikashvili.

Baku European Games are held for the first time in history. The Netherlands will host this tournament in 2019.
