Georgian Chess Player's Triumph in China

World Team Championship 2015 in chess ended with the Georgian chess player’s triumph. As far as you know, Chengdu (China) hosted this Championship on April 18-28.

Georgian chess players had only 4th seed and were behind Ukraine, Russia and China, however showed almost ideal result. In the first round, the Georgian team played draw with Russia 2:2 and then celebrated 8 (!) victories in a row.

Here are the results: 4:0 – against Egypt, 2.5:1.5 – Poland, 3:1 – Kazakhstan, 2.5:1.5 – Ukraine, 3:1 – USA, 2.5:1.5 – India, 3:1 – Armenia and 2.5:1.5 – China. As a result, the Georgians earned 17 points and occupied the first place.

Russia occupied the second place with 15 points and China (11) won the bronze medal.

Recall that Davit Jojua captained the Georgian team and Bela Khotenashvili (2513), Lela Javakhishvili (2481), Meri Arabidze (2374), Nino Batsiashvili (2473) and Samole Melia (2459) defended the honor of the team. It should be also mentioned that the leader of the team Nana Dzagnidze did not take part in this tournament, which makes the success even more valuable.

The Georgians have excellent results even on separated boards. Khotenashvili took the first place on the first board with 7.5 points of 9 and Arabidze earned 6.0 points of 7 on the 3rd board.

For instance, Women’s World Team Championship was held for the 5th time and the Georgian team gained such success for the first time. Before, the best result was the 3rd place in 2011 in Turkey.

In this regard, China is apparent leader, which won gold medals 3 times (2007, 2009 and 2011). It is interesting that Russia’s strongest team is unable to take first place.
