European Open finished with Georgian-Japanese controversy. In +100 kg Georgian heavyweight Levan Matiashvili wrestled Hisayoshi Harasawa and unfortunately lost.
Georgian judokas Adam Okruashvili and Levan Matiashvili were No.1 seeds in +100 kg. We are looking forward to Georgian final but… Okruashvili is far from optimal form and weight. He only beat Thomas Pille of Germany. In ¼ final the Georgian failed to Stepan Sarkisyan of Russia. In repechage semifinal Okruashvili fell to Soo-Whan Kim of South Korea and finally he took the 7th place and earned 16 ranking points.
Matiashvili defeated three opponents. He won over Joshua Santos Vasquez of Peru and Keita Iwao of Japan. In semifinal Matiashvili beat Or Sasson of Israel.
Today Beka Gviniashvili won bronze medal in 90 kg. The 19-year-old Georgian participant defeated Patryk Ciechomski of Poland.
Gviniashvili lost gold-silver chance in ¼ final where he failed to Nicolas Brisson of France.
In repechage Gviniashvili beat Samir Guchapshev of Russia and Dmitri Gerasimenko of Serbia.
In 100 kg Aleksandre Mskhaladze beat Aaron Wolf of Japan, Jakub Wojcik of Poland and Peter Paltchik of Israel. Then, he failed to Toma Nikiforov of Belgium.
In “bronze final” Mskhaladze lost to Jorge Fonseca of Portugal.
Levan Matiashvili earned 60 points, Beka Gviniashvili – 40 and Mskhaladze – 20.
Today another three Georgian judokas wrestled in the name of Georgia but all of them lost the first round. Tamaz Kirakozashvili (81 kg) fell to Aljaz Sedej of Slovenia, Giorgi Setieli (100 kg) – to Vladyslav Dibrova of Ukraine and Rezo Tsulukidze (100 kg) – to Maximilian Hageneder of Austria.
The Georgia team finished European Open with 1 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze. The team took the second place.
Dusseldorf Grand Prix will be held on February 20-22.
