Today, at the current European Open Championship in Rome, the medals were played in the first 3 categories: 60, 66 and 73. After the end of the preliminary stage meetings, members of Georgian national judo team gained the right to wrestle in the final of all three weight categories. Before the start of the decisive meetings, it was already known that the team of Irakli Uznadze would win at least one gold, because in 73kg weight Lasha Shavdatuashvili and Nugzar Tatalashvili had to face each other.
The evening program turned to be unsuccessful for Georgian judokas – in 60kg weight category Amiran Papinashvili lost to Japanese Yuma Oshima and in 66kg debutant Tornike Tatarashvili could not beat Jewish Tal Flicker.
In the final meeting of the day, Nugzar Tatalashvili got 4 warnings from the referee in a minute and 49 seconds and Shavdatuashvili gained the gold and 100 ranking points. Silver medalist Georgian judokas earned 60-60 points.
On the final way, Shavdatuashvili beat Ukrainian Sergiy Pliyev, Slovenian Igor Potparic, Chinese Shuai Sun and Italian Marco Maddaloni.
Today, on the Italian tatami, Tristan Peikrishvili, Shalva Kardava (both 66kg) and Pridon Gigani (73kg) also participated in the name of Georgia. Peikrishvili made through to the final program – in the repechage final he lost to French Julien Ottaviani by ippon and took the 5th place. Gigani occupied the 7th position and Kardava lost to Italian Emanuele Bruno and stayed beyond the European Open Championship.
According to the first day’s results, Georgian team leads the championship.
Tomorrow, champions and prizewinners will be revealed in the remaining four categories: 81, 90, 100 and +100. Following judokas will wrestle under the Georgian flag: Tamaz Kirakozashvili (81kg), Beka Gviniashvili (90kg), Aleksandre Mskhaladze, Giorgi Setieli, Rezo Tsulukidze (all three 100kg), Adam Okruashvili and Levan Matiashvili (+100kg).
Gviniashvili and Okruashvili are # 1 seeded in the tournament draw.
