Kutaisi Stadium Named After Ramaz Shengelia

The Assembly of Kutaisi named the central stadium after Ramaz Shengelia, former forward of “Dinamo” Tbilisi and the team of Soviet Union. The Assembly decided this at a meeting on April 30.

The Assembly’s Chairman Davit Dvali thinks that this decision is glorious: “Congratulations. This is a glorious decision, which will be estimated more after years”.

Ramaz Shengelia played for “Torpedo” Kutaisi, “Dinamo” Tbilisi and Soviet Union’s team. In 1981, he won Cup Winners’ Cup. In 1978, he became the champion of the Soviet Union. In 1979, he won the Union Cup. In 1977, he gained the silver medal of Union Championship and in 1981 – bronze. He was five times named among “33 best”. He has the highest number of goals scored in the club of “Grigory Fedotov’s top scorers”. In 1978 and 1981, he was named the best football player of Soviet Union. In 1981, Shengelia was named the best sportsman of Georgia. He was a participant of World Championship 1982. He managed to score against the team of Scotland at the group stage. Ramaz Shengelia scored 10 goals in 26 matches for the Union’s team.

He dies of heart attack at the age of 55 on June 21, 2012.
